Contact Lens Tips
Benefits of Wearing Contacts
The main advantage of contact lenses over spectacles is better peripheral vision and less image distortion. Contacts can provide superior vision because there is no air gap between the eye and the corrective lens. This air gap is one of the causes of increased image distortion for spectacle wearers. Contact lenses can also be useful for cosmetic, sporting and work-related reasons.
Range of Contact Lenses
- Daily reusable: These contacts are reusable and have a 2–4 week replacement cycle.
- Daily disposable: These are disposable contacts that are discarded after each wear.
- Extended wear: These contacts can be worn continuously for up to 30 days.
- Multifocal: These contacts are designed for users over 40 years of age.
- Coloured lenses: These lenses can change the colour of your eyes.
Trying Out Contact Lenses
Contact lenses are made from sensitive, gel-like materials such as silicone hydrogel. This material is widely used because it is comfortable to wear, allows high oxygen transmission and can help retain moisture on the lens surface, reducing irritation and discomfort for the wearer.

Contact Lens Tips and Advice
We recommend that children be at least 12 years of age before being fitted with contact lenses. From 12 to 16 years of age, we would normally fit one-day disposable contact lenses. One-day disposable contacts are the safest and often most convenient lenses available for this age group.
Useful Tips for Contact Lens Care
Always:
- Wash, rinse and dry your hands thoroughly before handling your lenses.
- Have an up-to-date pair of spectacles for when you need to remove your lenses.
- Replace your lenses at the interval specified by your optometrist.
- Have regular check-ups with your optometrist as recommended.
- Seek professional advice if you are having problems with your contact lenses.
- Ask yourself these three important questions each day that you wear your lenses:
- Do my eyes look good?
- Do my eyes feel good?
- Can I see well?
If you cannot answer “yes” to all of these, or you have any other doubts concerning your contact lenses, remove your lenses immediately and seek the advice of your optometrist.
Never:
- Go to bed with a painful red eye. Seek advice immediately.
- Bring any contact lens into contact with tap water.
- Wet your lenses with saliva.
- Wear your lenses while swimming, unless you use goggles.
